I’m having a blast. There is nothing sweeter, more meaningful than doing what I love and trusting it will all get done. It’s a thrilling ride and there is so much more ahead.
Here’s what I’ve learned so far:
1. Respect the Contrast
For many years I looked around and saw only the things I didn’t like. I pushed against all of it. I wished and prayed for things to be different and nothing much changed. In hindsight I realized all of those experiences helped to define what I did want – conscious living, service to the community, loving companions and colleagues and as much Yoga and Meditation as possible. Once I got clear on what I wanted, I paid attention to where I saw it in my life. I appreciated every moment of laughter, positivity, love and then the next step appeared. And I took it.
2. Intuition is a Rope
When you hear that small whisper or that loud roar – listen. This is your soul, your source energy, your godliness, your consciousness speaking directly to you. This voice calls you in the direction of your joy. How do you hear this voice? Pay attention to how you feel, do more of what makes you happy. Sit quietly, meditate, be in nature, move your body, spend time with happy, loving people. Put an end to your complaining. Step away from complainers. Ditto for complaining about complainers.
3. Believe
This dream of owning and operating a Yoga Centre moved from a seed to a bloom because I made a bold declaration and I believed it could happen. Without belief, the idea would have remained in suspended animation. Wanting in futility feels bad. Wanting and knowing it will happen is inspired living. This comes back to beliefs. A belief is just a repetitive thought. You can think anything you want. Be careful of who you share with though – naysayers abound. Only you can make things possible or impossible.
4. Act the Part
As soon as the idea solidified in my mind – I started to ask questions. I looked up the software I would need. I talked to others with experience in retail. I looked at the Yoga world around me and made decisions about how I wanted my version to look and feel and smell and even taste – come try the Yogi Tea! From wanted to expecting to creating – all of it required me to be who I wanted to be. Nothing less and nothing more. When I got stuck for ideas or direction – I asked for help. You can too.
Now a month old – YogaVision Centre is taking shape and form. The teachers here have a wealth of experience – I learn from them every day – and they are great company. The members who are joining on a daily basis are fun, relaxed and looking to deepen their practice. Exactly who I intended to work with.
If I can do it – so can you. So – what is it that your heart desires? Take the first step. Here is a great meditation to start the process:
much love,
Salimah

The issue you are dealing with isn’t the issue. The real issue is how you relate with yourself through this issue. Your relationship with the issue is the issue itself. When you make the issue about yourself, then you are stuck. Feeling stuck feels like anger or sadness. The root of anger and sadness is fear. To get out of the muck use this simple breathing technique:
And then ask yourself, what am I afraid of? The answer may surprise you. There are three conditions to transformating the fear.
1. You sincerely want the shift
2. You are open to asking for help.
3. You are ready to receive.
If you were a stranger, what advice would you offer to the person in the mirror? Once you’ve heard the advice – take it on. It serves you to be clear on which attributes you want to keep, toss or donate to a worthy cause (hint hint – giving back to your community is much more gratifying that giving to that friend with perpetual relationship drama).
As you loosen your attachment to this thing, you will set yourself free. You can do it. I know you can.
I’d love for you to share your thoughts and experiences on this topic. How do you shift out of a funk? And if you are ready to publicly ready to embrace your freedom for the year ahead, I invite you to claim that in the comment section below!
Love,
Salimah

A few years ago my spiritual teacher presented these questions to us during an early morning meditation. I remember the clarity and hope the solutions offered. Today, as life offers more opportunity and a huge field of possibility, I see the relevance of these teachings. Our shadow sides, moments of doubt, turmoil, or grief offer motivation to move forward. In the moment, having a technique is a saving grace. From that new point of understanding and better feeling thoughts, the cosmos offers more of the same. The better it gets the better it gets. Enjoy the process.
Without further ado here they are – use them often.
The solution is the mantra – I am I am
"You are not what you take yourself to be. Find out what you are. Watch the sense 'I am', find your real Self." Hold on to the sense 'I am' tenaciously and in the stillness of your mind – see yourself as you truly are – unbound. Everything after “I am” creates.
The Universe is within you. Everything that you need and want and hope for is within you already. Look within and find your essence. Control your mind, not other people.
3. Am I secure?
The solution – GOD is your security. GOD is an acronym for the Generating Organizing Delivering mechanism in the Universe. When you remember GOD – you remember the totality from which we come, that we are connected to and how we connect to each other.
What are your thoughts on these Questions? What are you doing to move past your limitations and make a difference in the world? Let me know and I will feature you in my next blog post.
Love,
Salimah

Hi All,
On Sunday, May 26 from 9am to 10am at Metro Hall in Toronto, I will be leading a Yoga segment for Seniors at the World Partnership Walk. Come out and support this amazing event and bring your friends and family.
Here is a selection of exercises to get everyone warmed up for the Walk. These basic moves promote flexibility by loosening the muscles. These movements should be practices slowly with focus on the breath. For anyone with pre-existing condtions or a sedentary lifestyle check with your doctor before starting an exercise program. And most importantly - you know your body best - if it hurts - don't do it.
1. Alternate nostril breathing
Use the thumb of your right hand to block off your right nostril, fingers are pointing straight up like an antennae. Breathe long and deep through the left nostril 1 minute. Switch sides. 1 minute.
2. Neck rolls
Drop your right ear to your right shoulder and inhale as you circle your neck back and inhale as you circle your neck forward. 5 x and then go in the opposite direction 5x.
3. Shoulder Rolls
Roll your shoulders up and back 5x. Roll your shoulders forward. 5x.
4. Tricep Stretch
Bring your left arm up over your head, palm touching the back of your shoulder. Using your right hand, press your elbow back to further the stretch. 1 minute. Switch sides. 1 minute.
5. Chest stretch
Interlace your fingers behind your back. Inhale as you extend your arms up, breath long and deep. Relax the pose and inhale as you bring the arms up again. 3 x
6. Wrist Rotation
Pull the fingers of your right hand back gently with the left hand hold for 10 seconds. Switch sides for ten seconds.
7. Ankle Rotation + Point and Flex
Extend your legs out in front of you, toes pointing toward the sky. Rotate your ankles in one direction, alternatively pointing and flexing your feet to stretch the Achilles tendon. 1 minute. Rotate in the opposite direction. 1 minute.
Stand up slowly and bring your hands onto your hips. Gently rotate your hips in one direction. 1 minute. Rotate in the other direction. 1 minute.
9. Archer Pose
Bring your left foot forward and bend the knee. Bring left arm up and the thumb up. Hold 1 minute. Switch leg and hold for 1 minute.
Looking forward to seeing you on Sunday.
with Love,
Salimah

Ok, so maybe Valentine's Day is a cheesy, commercially fabricated reason
to purchase fuzzy hearts or feel lonely or hate on others. Or maybe its
the perfect reason to explore love, redefine what it means and share
more.
I choose the later.
I hated on Christmas for all the same reasons until I met people who
really celebrate the miracle of a spiritual teacher, honor family
recipes and want to be together. It was eye opening and opened
opportunities for love and sharing.
February holds the same miracle potential. This year I have Love day
cards for my dad, my niece and nephew and for all the other people who
make life fun and easy - Shoba at Tim Horton's who knows my standing
order, Brigid who faithfully attends Monday night online classes and
invites all her friends to join and John who I may never see again.
Love is also a tough teacher. When I look at someone and find something
to admire, that's about me. When I look at someone and find something
to criticize, that's about me too. The mirror work is rewarding because
consciousness evolves our spiritual nature. And a willingness to forgive
evolves our relationships. The highest form of Yoga is marriage for
this exact reason. There is no deeper asana, longer meditation or deeply
felt breath as a commitment to love. Be with your wobbles and shakes
one of my teachers would say when we were in tree pose. It is true off
the mat as much as on the mat.
This month do it differently. Love because you can. Love in a way that
serves and uplifts. Express your love without hesitation and watch what
unfolds.
Oh yeah and send someone a cheesy fuzzy heart.

The first day of class is always so exciting. On Monday, October 29 all the names, voices and email addresses gathered together via Skype. Most of us have never met face to face. Our paths crossed via FaceBook, You Tube and Twitter. We converged in cyberspace – Toronto, Halifax, Edmonton, Costa Rica and Washington DC to name a few - all online at the same time in pursuit of the same thing – purpose and meaning. It was electric and electronic.
Through the next eight weeks, we will explore Love Through the Chakras. Chakras, Sanskrit for wheels, direct and move energy through the body. There are eight Chakras in the Kundalini Yoga tradition and each one offers an opportunity for exploring love in a particular way.
I created this series because being aware and connected to this energy system is an opportunity to know ourselves more deeply and completely, to live life and love in a conscious and consistent way. During the coming weeks I will share what happens in each class; explain the positive elements and opportunities for love for each Chakra. Work with us, get to know your Chakras and be a part of this online experience.
The Root Chakra
Sitting in an easy crossed legged position, bring your awareness to the base of your spine and the part of you that is sitting closest to the ground. The Root Chakra governs the organs of elimination, the element is earth and the colour is red. It is our shared connection to the planet, our groundedness and rootedness to reality. The Root Chakra is the container for our habits and instinctual behavior.
Love from the Root Chakra takes the form of acceptance. In a state of acceptance we take responsibility for our lives and flow with these circumstances. The shadow emotion involves resentment and rigidity. This holding on can manifest as constipation, a controlling nature or blaming others.
Mantra for Acceptance
“As you go throughout your day, become conscious of your breath. Let your exhale be a physical letting go and as you become aware of the letting go, silently chant on every exhalation, “let go, let god”. god is the Generating Organizing and Delivering mechanism in the Universe. You don’t need to analyze the process – just trust. Accept your parents, your siblings, your partner, your friends, your co workers, your bosses, teachers, and yourself. Understand and accept yourself – for everything, including not being to accept some people just yet. When you are ready to you will, and when you do, you will receive a feeling of lightness of being that you never dreamed possible. You will be in a state of grace.” Adapted from The Eight Human Talents, by Gurmukh.
What do you need to accept in order to move forward? Your sexuality? Your freedom from cultural norms? That a certain relationship is over?
This is how you use the breath to control your mind.
The Kriya (series of exercises) I chose for this class worked on the digestive system. Having a strong digestive system is the key to good health and stimulates the Root Chakra.
Acceptance requires Trust.
It’s perfect timing for you to join the class. Next Monday we will be exploring the second chakra – Love through sexuality, creativity and abundance. Oh My. Please drop me a line at salimah@yogavision.com to register for this Free online experience.
With love,
Salimah

Auni and Wendy love mountain biking. Spending even a few minutes with either of them, the conversation usually turns to plans, routes, weather, outfits all in pursuit of the perfect ride. When I got my first invitation to ride six months after meeting Auni – I was thrilled and terrified. I mean, how hard could it be really? I know how to ride a bike, hadn’t been on one in years but that was beside the point. And then again, trees don’t exactly move when you run into them
So we booked our date, my friends leant me all their cool racing gear, we rented a bad ass white bike from Caledon Hills Cycling and off we went to Albion Hills. Notice the word ‘Hills’? I didn’t.
I got on the bike and pedaled around the parking lot for a few minutes. I contemplated what the next 90 minutes might bring. And then set my intention for a safe and fun ride. Ego aside, these women bike often and they bike hard. So this ride would be a piece of cake for them and a minor miracle for me. Wendy rode ahead, setting the pace and the route, Auni rode behind me with instructions on the mechanics of the bike – shifting gears, steering, and oh yes, encouragement.
Off we went. I laughed, I screamed, I wanted to cry. And then I sweated, cursed, hugged a tree, peed in the bushes and ate French fries. It went in that order and I learned a few things along the way.
Ride with the Masters
All of my learning was fast forwarded by what Wendy and Auni already knew, about the bikes, the trail, their bodies and the weather. It was easy to love the experience because they were so committed and generous about sharing their knowledge. That’s why coaches, mentors, teachers and friends are worth their weight in diamonds. Love and support are essential to new ventures or seeing old territory differently.
It’s not a Spin Class
Rocks, roots and wind are game changers. I had to contend with that. Spin Class was a great way to condition my muscles, and getting on a bike outside provided context. Just like reading a book like Pema Chodron’s The Wisdom of No Escape is one way to learn technique, actually being in a situation that requires a deep conscious breath requires a different level of awareness. Will I remember to breathe? Will I understand that it’s time to inhale and then exhale? Perhaps. The practice reveals itself step by step and only when I am ready.
Feet Side by Side.
Balance is an elusive experience. At top downhill speed, balance on the bike is a practical safety concern. To avoid hitting rocks, I had to keep my feet parallel to each other. To enjoy the speed I had to feel safe. To be safe I had to be present in the moment. Checking out was not an option.
Boobs to the Bar
Uphill is a totally different experience of momentum. The best way is to strategically shift gears, apply force and lean into it chest first. It works. My friend, Sahil used to say “Dil Lag Liya” – put your heart into it.
Pedal Pedal Pedal
Auni says from behind me “Keep your feet moving no matters what. Your eyes will take you exactly where you look. Focus far ahead, not at the rocks and roots! And remember, you can run over everything and trust the bike will carry you safely. “
Aah trust. It always comes down to trust.
By the way, Trees actually do move when you need them too. More on that next time.
With love,
Salimah
