ABOUT THE AUTHOR
 
FENULLA JIWANI presents this book as her literary debut! It brings her much joy to be sharing her journey, insights, awakenings and key messages.  Fenulla holds a Bachelor of Education along with a Bachelor of Arts in Specialized Honors Psychology. She is also a graduate of the Randolph Academy for the Performing Arts where she trained in singing, dancing and acting. Fenulla is Artistic Director of her production company, FenStar Productions.  She is also a playwright and an actor, having written and performed in all five of her plays, and has appeared on many television and radio shows, as well as being featured in major newspapers and magazines. Her critically acclaimed production, 30 DATES, is returning to stage for it’s 2 year Anniversary at The Canadian Stage Company’s Berkeley Street Theatre Upstairs from June 2-12, 2010. South Asian nominated for poetry prize

A Canadian of South Asian origin has been nominated for the 2010 Gerald Lampert award shortlist.  Soraya Peerbaye has been shortlisted for her book of Poems for the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names.   Born in London, Ontario, Peerbaye has lived in Toronto and Mauritius. Over the years, her poetry has been published in big boots, Other Voices, Prairie Fire and the The New Quarterly, as well as Red Silk: an Anthology of South Asian Canadian Woman Poets.  Currently completing her MFA in Creative Writing at the University of Guelph, the poet’s work has been commissioned by CBC Radio 1, the Deep Wireless Festival of Radio Art and the Liaison of Independent Filmmakers of Toronto.“The Gerald Lampert Memorial Award is given in the memory of Gerald Lampert, an arts administrator who organized authors' tours and took a particular interest in the work of new writers. The award recognizes the best first book of poetry published by a Canadian in the preceding year and carries a $1,000 prize,” says Joanna Poblocka, executive director of the League of Canadian Poets.
 
Peerbaye’s name was announced in the 2010 Gerald Lampert shortlist at the launch of National Poetry Month held on April 1 at Ben McNally bookstores in Toronto.

Other names on the Gerald Lampert list include Kate Hall for The Certainty Dream, James Langer for Gun Dogs, Marcus McCann for Soft Where, Marguerite Pigeon for Inventor and Robert Earl Stewart for Something Burned Along the Southern Border.   Also announced were the 2010 Pat Lowther award shortlist that included Elizabeth Bachinsky for God of Missed Connection, Ronna Bloom for Permiso, Sina Queyras for Expressway, Damian Rogers for Paper Radio, Laisha Rosnau for Lousy Exploriers and Karen Solie for Pigeon.

“Winners of these awards will be announced during a special ceremony at the annual  LCP  Poetry Fest and Conference to be held in  Toronto  at 89 Chestnut Conference Centre from June 11- 13,” said Poblocka.
 
The event moderated by poet Andrea Thompson had a number of poets in attendance including Ontario poet Laureate, Dionne Brand.
 
Meanwhile, poets across the country are celebrating the 12th annual National Poetry Month (NPM) in April.  Established in Canada in April 1998 by the League, National Poetry Month (NPM) brings together schools, publishers, booksellers, literary organizations, libraries, and poets from across the country to celebrate poetry and its vital place in Canada's culture. Communities and businesses participate through readings, festivals, book displays, and other events.
