Hello Wellness Works readers!
Now that I've reopened my practice, Art of Wellness, I've had patients ask me about natural beauty products and what I use in particular, so I thought this week I'd share my regime with you all!
By no means are these the only products out there, it just happens to be what I am currently using and enjoying. I do tend to try new things to experiment with product quality and results, but there are some things that are tried, tested and true for me.
Price-wise, like all things out there, there's a wide range of price points - but I strongly believe in not paying a fortune for great quality, effective natural health products (I'm not interested in paying big markups for marketing... I'm talking to you high-end brands!) so everything I buy is very reasonably priced!
Here is the list from head to toe:
Shampoo/Conditioner: Right now I'm using Desert Essence Italian Red Grape - they have organic ingredients and no parabens, SLS and a list of other nasty things that shouldn't be in anything we put on ourselves. I flip between that and Burt's Bees (my husband's fave). There are many great brands that you can find at any natural food/health store and even Loblaws!
Bodywash: Method BodyWash (bought in large size on well.ca) - No parabens, sulfates etc. Smells great and doesn't dry the skin at all! Use with a face cloth or exfoliating glove for a great exfoliation that doesn't cost anything extra and saves you buying an additional product!
Body Lotion: I use organic coconut oil! Oil people, oil! I can't say enough good things about using oils for moisturizing! You don't need all these strongly perfumed, chemical-laden creams that absorb into your skin.. keep it simple - use olive or coconut oil. Your skin will thank you (and so will your wallet!). The tub I am using is $10 and have had it for months!
Deodorant: Toms of Maine or JASON. Both are free of aluminum but beware, these are NOT anti-perspirants - only deodorants. It would be a completely separate blog post about my opinion on why we are all being sold products to stop one of our body's natural processes. You are meant to sweat (and for the majority of the population it is a normal process and not in excess) and so simply masking any odour is better than actually stopping the function altogether! As above, you can find at a health food store or even Walmart!
Before showering: Dry Brush! There are so many benefits to dry brushing before you hop in the shower. Simply purchase a dry brush from a beauty store, Walmart or Shoppers Drug Mart and use in long strokes towards the heart, and circular strokes on tummy. I won't go into details before here are a few reasons why we should all be dry brushing:
- Cleanses the lymphatic system
- Removes dead skin layers
- Stimulates circulation
- Strengthens the immune system
- Removes cellulite (bonus!)
Next blog, I'll move on to beauty products!
If you use any natural bath/hygiene products, please share with us so we can all learn and choose wisely what we put on ourselves!
