As we know, this season has seen a horrible flu epidemic in Canada and in particular in the Eastern US. While getting the flu shot can be very helpful for some, there are also things we can ALL do naturally to help boost our immune system to fight off infections, including the flu virus.
Here are my top 4 ways to naturally get your body's defense at their best:
Sleep is when the body's repairs and rebuilds - especially the immune system. Sleep, especially for children, is key - be sure they are getting 8-10hrs a night and stick to a regular schedule. However, if you feel that they are more fatigued than usual, it may be that their bodies are on the brink of getting a bug - extra sleep will do a body good! Same thing goes for us - don't fight the need to sleep! Better to have a long, good night's rest vs. being sick in bed!
2. Cut the sugar and processed foods!
Both sugar and processed foods impact the immune system in a negative way. In fact, through a complex set of reactions in the body, both actually depress the immune system. Try to avoid the obvious: chips, cookies, candies, soda and ice cream. Also, read the labels! Sugar is hidden everywhere: look for ingredients such as high-fructose corn syrup, brown rice syrup, sucrose, fructose, barley malt - to name a few.
3. Eat fresh fresh fresh!
Fresh, whole foods provide you with the BEST vitamins and nutrients to keep your immune system strong and healthy! Vitamin C, zinc, Vitamin E and Selenium are key in boosting the immune system - choose fruits and veggies like apples, berries, kale, spinach, brocolli, carrots and sweet potatoes.
4. Wash your hands, but avoid 'anti-bacterial' soaps!
Bacteria are everywhere. Its a fact. And having those bacteria around are key in building our immune system so we are stronger for when the 'bag bugs' invade and attack! The best way to wash hands is hot water, soap and thoroughly washing! Antibacterial products are futile and may actually cause harmful bacteria to become resistant. Of course there is a place for the sanitizing hand liquids, but for everday prevention - good old handwashing will go further in keeping you healthy and flu-free!
Wishing you a flu-free season,
