Seasons Greetings! I was recently watching the Nate Berkus Show (a re-run on OWN now!) and he had a guest expert on who made a statement that gave me quite the 'A-HA!' moment and I wanted to share it with you in this short, but sweet blog post!
The wisdom was given to a woman who had so much on her plate and not enough time to organize her home office! Design dilemma aside, the guest expert said to her very plain and simple: "Every Yes is a No and Every No is a Yes".
What does it mean? It means everytime you say YES to something, you are saying NO to something else. Meaning, if you keep saying Yes to every offer and every opportunity that comes into your life, you are, in effect, saying no to something else in your life that you may value more. Unfortunately, this ends up leading to the all-to-common syndrome of 'not enough time' to... spend with your children, your spouse, your health/fitness, your spiritual part of you life etc etc etc...whatever IS important to YOU.
In truth, the list of 'stuff' that we often say yes to and obligate ourselves to, may not always be on our top list of things we'd actually want to spend our precious time on. So why do we do it?
I have no idea. But we all do.
But now knowing that Every Yes means No can help break that pattern. Where are you saying Yes in your life and what are you saying No to as a result? Moreover, what ARE the most valuable things in your life that you would want to have more time to dedicate to. Take a look at where your time is going and where you'd ideally want it to go and see if there is a small or large gap in between.
What have you been saying Yes to that you can say No to in 2013? Is there anything that you can eliminate to make time for what's important to you?
I hope you'll give this some thought as we get close to another new year - remember that every Yes is a No and with that in mind, I hope you will take on only those endeavours that bring you joy and are meaningful to you.
Yours in Wellness,
Dr. Shamira
