This week I want to share some creative, innovative research findings about just how fantastic FIBRE is for us and how powerful the human body is.
Dr. Oz (Oprah's health expert) recently showed new research on food myths and this one is great, I had to share it with you! In the research study, two truck drivers were used who consumed a very-low fibre diet (typically food you can eat when you're on the road is usually processed, fast-food and thus has little fibre). To begin, researchers wanted to know how slow their digestive systems were and so they used a pill w/ a transmitter so they could track the transit time (yes, that's from one end to another!). With their current low-fibre diet, the transmitter took almost one full day for one subject and 42 hours for the second!
Next, the intervention. The two subjects went on a week-long dietary change which included whole grain cereal bars, fruit with the skin on and whole grain breads. The result? Amazing. The transit time for both subjects improved substantially - in fact, the one gentlemen who was at 42 hours went down to 12 hours!
So, what does all this mean - they are just pooping faster?! Well yes, but more importantly - because fibre has an immediate affect on moving the 'waste' through our colon, that also means that it is removing toxins at a faster rate thus reducing one's risk for colon cancer. In addition, it also helps move bile (which turns to cholesterol when absorbed in the bowels) - so the faster you suck the bile out, the lower the cholesterol. It also helps get rid of sugar - another huge plus. All in all, with just one week of changing one's diet - the results are fantastic. Now that's what I call a magic bullet - good ol' fibre!
How much do we need? Women generally need 25grams of fibre a day, men about 35grams. Unfortunately, the average person only consumes approximately 7grams a day! So, let's up our servings of fruits/vegetables (7-10 servings/day will do the trick) as well as our intake of whole grains and let's get our bowels dancing again! :)
