I travel to and back from work everyday on the subway… or the TTC, whatever you may call it. And one of the best parts of my ride is the moment that I step in and out of the subway. I promise that it's not because of some secret rush hour death wish or that I like to stare at random strangers (though that’s entertaining too sometimes!).
What I do like about my ride is the first moment I hear strains of some music. And mercifully, this city is blessed with many talented musicians and they do they best to make the commute a slightly better experience.
Often at Bloor and Yonge, you’ll hear an amazing guitarist who plays Latin music and has a few CDs out for sale. He’ll often collaborate with a vocalist who sings in a language that is alien to me but somehow it manages to enrapture me and I often stop to have a listen.
At Bay, you’ll hear a fantastic saxophonist whose notes resonate in the underground tunnel that links the main street to the subway entrance. Maybe it’s the acoustics in the tunnel or just the fact that the musician is completely oblivious to rush hour commuters who weave in and around him, but the music never sounded sweeter. At other times, I’ve heard a lively accordion player, who never fails to lift my spirits especially after a terribly tiring day. On more than one occasion, I’ve heard a classical violinist play some incredibly intricate music and it just makes me feel incredibly privileged to have access to this talent.
At the Islington subway station, you’ll hear an old Asian gentleman who plays the Chinese violin and plays some beautiful music. It’s a pleasure to listen especially on days when he chooses to play traditional Chinese tunes, as opposed to the more popular and instantly recognizable Western tunes.
At Union, you’ll hear a cacophony of sounds… sometimes, there’s a saxophonist, sometimes there’s a musician who plays the harp, almost angelically! There’s certainly no lack of talent in this city and a huge thank you to all those who help to brighten up my mornings and provide a soothing way to wrap my day! (And yes, I do show my appreciation for the sheer joy they provide, by dropping a few bucks into a hat or case... )
yeah even I enjoy listening to them the subway musicians- reminds me of Simon and Garfunkel's lyrics- 'the words of the prophet are written on the subway walls'- you can listen to the music of the lord in the subways - it's so amazing!

Yeah listening to subway musicians is one way of relaxing and releasing of bored. More specially if you hear the playing of violin it so wonderful I can spend a lot of times waiting here and listening to them.
