As we kick off 2010,
what goals have you set for yourself this year?
I actually set my goals for this year back in October 2009. And
one of these goals was to fulfill a lifelong dream of releasing a solo album in 2010. The second goal is to start my own foundation to assist struggling
families in the South Asian community in Canada.
What can audiences
expect from you this year?
The audience can expect a superbly produced
album from me. I say that because I am also a fan of music, in general and I
listen and support everyone’s music. But I have confidence and faith that audiences will pick my album as one of the top five albums in 2010. I
guarantee you that!
You've worn many hats
– beauty queen and musician, just to name a few. Have these career choices been something you
planned all along?
Actually I never planned a career as a beauty queen but I
thank God for the opportunity because it gave me more confidence as a woman.
The "Miss Pakistan" title allowed me to travel and learn so much from the different countries
I visited. I believe that opportunity rekindled my zeal to start my own
foundation to assist people who are less fortunate. However singing and music
has and will always be my first passion and that’s what I’m going to be doing
for a while, so you will be hearing a lot from me for the next 30 years.
What do you consider your biggest accomplishment to date?
I think my biggest accomplishment to date is in knowing that
every breath I take in life means there are more opportunities to set new
goals. Each day I live is set as an accomplishment drive to learn more, help
others and be thankful for whatever I have.
Is it tough breaking into the mainstream music
scene as a South Asian artist?
I would say it is tough in general to break into the
mainstream music scene - whether I’m a South Asian artist or not. I also consider
myself an artist and not just a South
Asian artist. There are lots of big promises and setbacks in the music industry.
It’s about who you know and how important you are to those people. It’s about
believing in yourself, having faith in God and working twice as smart and hard
as the next person trying to do the same thing.
Tell us about your debut album and the first single which will be released soon.
Like they say, it takes your whole life to record your first
album. I can’t reveal the title just yet but it will be out this summer. First
of all the production quality of each song is simply excellent!I am really excited
about the album as I am my biggest fan. I have a song on my album called
"Maybe Now Maybe Later" - it sounds like Lady Gaga and Michael Jackson
meets Lil Jon and Prince. The song is most likely going to be the official second
single off my album and the video treatment is in the pipeline. I can’t wait to
let people hear the song. The album will take the listener on an
exciting journey because there is something in my album for
everybody.
My first single Rock Desi is produced by my manager and producer Eeema. I'm glad we reconnected again and it shows in the quality of my music. Rock Desi is a fun song,
and the reason why I chose this as my first single is to give my fans a
representation of where I’m coming from.
What’s next for Naomi Zaman?
It’s going to be a fun and busy year. I’m going on a promotional tour across Canada and the U.S. to support the single Rock Desi which will be available for download on iTunes and all digital retail stores on January 26th. Also, I will be appearing at various concert events and I’m performing at the first ever Masala Mehndi Masti winter festival in February. Then, I will be heading to the U.K. and Germany in the spring. You can be part of my journey as I will be documenting everything visually on my website www.naomizaman.com
