Catching up on my daily quota of news, I came across this blog at the Globe and Mail, that talked about the Toronto song contest. Curiosity got the better of me and I had to check out the winning song. One thing led to another and I found myself browsing through the list of finalists in the contest. And that's when I came across a Canadian artist of South Asian descent, named Shobha, who made it to the final few...
A few clicks later, I was able to check out her music, her music videos, files on youtube and even check out her friends on myspace... That is pretty cool! And just so I don't completely digress, I was pleasantly surprised to hear a pretty good playlist on her site. Her style is modelled on a laidback hip-hop, RnB vibe and from listening to a few tracks, she'd probably fit in easily with many of today's popular artists...
The internet is a great thing for music artists all over the world. Sure, the piracy and peer to peer sharing networks aren't exactly heaven-sents, but when it comes to giving an artist exposure to a wide audience, no amount of promotion or marketing comes close. There literally is no competition to the kind of publicity you can get from being visible online.
From myspace pages to artist websites to fan forums - the kind of tools musicians and artists can use today are simply phenomenal. In fact, if you're a musician who wants to get noticed, the net's probably your best bet at being picked up by a local talent scout. Post something on youtube and it's viral within a few hours. Remember the band that created a song about their lead singer's damaged guitar, thanks to the carelessness of a leading airline? The song may have been written in a hurry and may not win any songwriting or music awards, but it certainly got the message across. And from that one video that many may have checked out for the heck of it, there are still more who may have actually listened to the band's music and then before you know it, the band has a much bigger following. All thanks to one video upload.
Twitter's a pretty interesting tool to use and follow. Not everyone makes the best use of the 140 characters given to them but most popular musicians are twittering to their heart's content. Check out tweets from a wide range of musicians -
Britney Spears,
Pearl Jam,
Lil' Wayne,
Coldplay - everyone's on there and everyone has a lot to say! Not all of it always makes sense but if it's a way to remind your audience of your existence and/or an upcoming show, tweets definitely help.
In a day and age where everyone's fighting for a little piece of the celebrity pie and the lines between private and public personas are disappearing, it'll be interesting to follow how many of these artists continue to live very public lives, with instant updates and uninterrupted access to their personal lives. It's beyond me why any of these celebrities need paparazzi or tabloids when they do such a great job of sharing where they are heading to, or what they're eating or their state of mind! I guess your popularity is rated by the number of paparazzi following you? Or maybe it's the number of followers you have on your twitter page? What do you think?
