I'm not sure what it is about being famous that renders celebrities to weird behaviour. In simple words, does being famous give a celebrity need to be controversial?
Take this whole Rihanna and Chris Brown controversy which has been hacked to death everywhere. Suddenly, two young superstars, supposedly in love have now walked into a dark area of controversy and gossip. From the "good" kids of popular culture, they've managed to outdo Brangelina and their Oscar hoo-haa with Jennifer Aniston. Musically, both Brown and Rihanna have had a fabulous 2008 and it seemed such a waste to enter their audience's memory in 2009 by this controversial incident.
But they're not the first ones who've become famous because of controversy. Amy Winehouse is another powerhouse performer and artist who's more famous because of her "eccentric behaviour." Her beautiful voice and powerful lyrics are often overshadowed by antics related to drunken behaviour and run-ins with the paparazzi. In and out of rehab, Winehouse epitomises the rock 'n roll lifestyle your mom warned you about.
Then there's Britney Spears, Lindsay Lohan and a bunch of others who have made headlines consistently not due to outstanding albums or platinum-selling records but their personal lives splashed all over the news.
Looking further back in time, Kurt Cobain's death was a tragedy in every way. A hugely talented artist, he died much before his time. Despite multi-million selling records and a legacy unlike many others, he will remain etched in memory as a superstar who was addicted to drugs.
Maybe it's just the nature of the business they're in. Then again, maybe not. Michael Phelps, the Olympian superachiever, succumbed to temptation and was caught on camera. Either way, being a celebrity doesn't seem to be an easy task. Having said that, many celebrities seem to thrive on a little controversy. I guess there's nothing better than some publicity and being in the public eye, whatever it takes!
