I chanced upon a song by Joss Stone a couple of years back and for some reason, every time I make a big decision, I hear it playing in the background (in true Bollywood ishtyle!) The song is called Right to be Wrong and was featured on Stone's second album Mind, Body & Soul which was received well by critics and the masses alike.
With powerful vocals, Joss Stone somehow reminds me of yesteryear soul singers like Aretha Franklin and other singers who used their vocals to great effect. Born in 1987, Stone is still far away from achieving legendary status but her albums so far have been pretty good listening. Her debut album The Soul Sessions had a couple of hit songs that made me wonder how someone so young could be so talented. Then again, one look at the dozen-odd reality shows tell you that youth and talent can get along handsomely.
Going back to Stone, I've been re-listening to Introducing Joss Stone, her third studio album released sometime last year. This album was described by Stone as her true self and expression of her musical identity in a media interview. She worked with Lauryn Hill amongst others for this album which didn't do quite as well commercially compared to her debut album. Having said that, if you enjoy a nice laidback sound, very reminiscent of the 70s and 80s then this album is worth a listen. You have Stone singing in a husky, deep voice set to good music in the genre of jazz, motown and R 'n B. It's definitely worth a listen.
Here's the video for Right to be Wrong, which reminds me that it's human to err sometimes...
