What kind of names do you call yourself or others when things go wrong? We all do it. Think of all the names we use during a road rage incident. How about when you have embarrassed yourself instead of making a good impression?
Name-calling is an unhealthy thought pattern, called “Labelling.” You end up attaching a negative label to the person instead of the behaviour. You might call yourself an “idiot” for forgetting something on your grocery list or a “loser” if you didn’t get the promotion at work. These put downs not only dampen your mood, but they bring down your self-esteem.
Listen to your vocabulary; if these words are part of your daily inner dialogue, you need to break the cycle. Focus on the offending behaviour, not the person. Behaviour is something we can work on or address in others. I can always be reached at 416.566.8252.
