What is the difference between a Psychologist and a Psychiatrist?

I get asked this question all the time. While they both treat mental health disorders, they have a different area of expertise. You cannot think that one is better than the other; in fact they are complimentary to each other. Psychiatrists are medical doctors. They have a degree in medicine and specialize in psychiatry. Psychiatrists can prescribe medications and order blood tests, or others exams that may be required. Their fees are covered by OHIP. You must be referred by your family doctor to see a psychiatrist.

Psychologists have a doctoral degree, a PhD, in psychology. They have relatively the same number of years of training in university. They learn many different talking strategies to heal emotional pain and psychological issues. They use many psychological tests to understand issues. Psychologists do not prescribe medications. However, they have excellent knowledge of individual, couples, marital and family counseling. You can refer yourself.

Who can best help you depends on your individual situation. Always talk to your family doctor as a start if you need some guidance.
