Every once in a while, I'm going to take a break from my musings to offer you the lowdown on a selection of new films that are out there. If this is something you enjoy, please comment and let me know! Here's the mini-scoop on some new movies right now (I haven't seen these, but if you have please do tell):
Awarapan
Shivam (Emraan Hashmi - yes, that kissing bandit is back again) is on a quest for happiness but finds only pain. Heartbroken over lost love, he dedicates his services to a mob boss (Ashutosh Rana), who runs a chain of hotels in Hong Kong. Malik asks Shivam to keep an eye on his attractive mistress, Reema (Mrinalini Sharma) while he is away. Reema instantly reminds Shivam of his lost love (Shriya Sen, the stunner from Sivaji: The Boss) and soon it is revealed that she has her own secrets.
Aap Ka Suroor - The Movie
We know Himesh Reshammiya (HR) can sing, but can he act? Watch this film and find out. Aap Ka Suroor begins with the corpse of a television personality being found in some remote place in Germany. HR, a singer (go figure), is arrested for the crime while touring in Germany. HR asks a lawyer (Mallika Sherawat) to defend him, not knowing that she is in love with him. Her love is rejected as HR is already in love with an attractive event planner (Hansika Motwani - is it just me or do you not recognise any of these heroine names?). Things take at turn for the weird when HR escapes from his prison cell after taking Raj Babbar as a hostage - Babbar plays the murdered woman's dad. In the end, HR sets out to find the murderer himself. I haven't seen the film, but the word out there is that it's fun to look at but lacks substance...oh, and the music is apparently good.
Partner
A pure masala copy of Will Smith's Hitch. Taran Adarsh, my favourite Hindi movie critic (www.indiafm.com) asks potential viewers of this film to "leave their brains in the almirah". Love it! Prem (Salman Khan) takes on Smith's role as a consultant for the romance-impaired. He claims to understand all the subtle nuances of the fairer sex, until he discovers the woman of his dreams (Lara Dutta) who has no time for him. Simultaneous to his own quest for love, he takes on Bhaskar (Govinda) as a client. Bhaskar is madly in love with Priya (Katrina Kaif), who is rich, beautiful and totally out of his league. Remember the fantastic dance scene between Will Smith and Kevin James in Hitch? I hope they included some of that in this remake.
