Masala! Mehndi! Masti! Rocked and Rolled

Masala! Mehndi! Masti! entered its second decade with a bang, raging the Harbourfront Centre from Aug. 19-21 with its stupendous 11^th festival! The venue was comfortably packed at all times, during performances like ‘Dirty Pakistani Lingerie’, ‘Bhangin’ by the Lake’, Dandiya Raas, Snehasish Mozumder & SOM, The Shillong Chamber Choir and Bathiya & Santhush drawing overflowing crowds!

Abhay Deol, fresh from his success with ‘Zindagi na milegi dobara’ was the featured Bollywood personality this year. Dressed in Dior, he floored everyone with his charming and dashing personality and was feted in Brampton upon arrival at The Tandoori Flame restaurant where Mayor Susan Fennell showed up to welcome him. On the 2^nd night, he was awarded with a citation for his work, which was signed by PM Stephen Harper and presented by MP Mark Adler. MP Bernard Trottier was also present. Monika Deol, the first Asian woman to host ‘Electric Circus’, Canada’s popular TV show, was presented with Masala!Mehndi! Masti!’s (M!M!M!) trailblazer award the same night.

Music headliner, The Shillong Chamber choir, winners of ‘India’s Got Talent’ 2010, delighted everyone with their shiMMMery choral music. Other headliners, Snehasish and Som brought back memories of the 60s and 70s playing to an overflowing venue as Snehasish dazzled everyone with his masterful picking of his double-neck mandolin backed by his aMMMazing musicians on the tabla, bass guitar and drums. For its hip-hop element, Sri Lanka’s hip-hop heavyweights Bathiya, Santhush, Randhir and Raj rocked the Westjet stage as screaming and cheering fans brought the house down at M!M!M!’s curtain call act on Sunday.

Expanding its horizons from its usual boundaries, M!M!M! brought in Afghani singers Waheed Soroor and Kice and a Japanese couple, Kaminari, who enraptured the audience with the scintillating sounds from their sitar and didgeridoo.

Traditional dances and soothing music by the Radha Academy, Panwar Dance Academy and the Rajasthani group saw patrons braving the rain and enjoying their exemplary performance.

To showcase upcoming South Asian artists singing in English, Bina Boo, prodigy Gabriella Rodgers and Mandippal took centre stage.

For its haute-cuisine element, none other than Toronto’s Roshni Mansukhani, winner of Food Network’s Chopped championship 2009, showcased her laudable culinary skills with demonstrations on fusion sushi, masala macaroni and cheese and healthy ‘chaat’ on lettuce leaves.

For its comedy component, Nitin Mirani of ‘Komic Sutra’ from Dubai and Toronto’s Crystal Ferrier had the audience splitting their sides with laughter!

For its intellectual component two plays were staged, Sacrifice by Rabindranath Tagore and Dirty Paki Lingerie, a play about 6 American Pakistani women trying to establish their identity. M!M!M! collaborated with MyBindi.com to present a literary panel with three Canadian authors, Mariellen Ward, Sylvia Fraser and Katherine Matthews who expressed their love for India. There was also a panel talking about the stigma of HIV within the South Asian community that got the brain cells working.

There were many more acts and performances including Beatitude, Indo - Caribbean hard-hitter SW Storm, Bollywood music duo Jonita and Nishith, qawali singer Naqi Ali Khan, Devis Anusha Sivalingham and Shirsha, Grammy award winner Chin Injeti, Sanskriti Arts, Tarana Dance, a Seniors’ Idol Contest, a baccha (children’s) party , a busy and fabulous Kids’ Zone and even a midnight yoga session!. It was a jam-packed weekend! From fun and frolic to scholarly material, M!M!M! had it all.

I have realized that ‘civilized’ is a place just idealized
As Somalis starve and Libyans die
I watch this city burn from the London Eye
 
Is it apathy, or hate, frustration or fate?
That gives way to such acts of cowardice – Is it innate?
That once in a generation, a Few will forget
What it means to be Human – Will some ever learn?
Or must I accept at this difficult turn,
That some men just like to watch the world burn
 
Yes I know it is not all, 
As our youth do good things, both great and small                                                                                                                                                                           But as I watch this festering fire burn

Through our streets, my stomach churns
I cannot help but wonder – 
Are some kids so lost, they cannot even be found?
If there is a place far from God, perhaps right now it’s London town
 
Or another city in the West, with nothing but the best
Of everything and anything one could want – lest
We should want for more, while others suffer with less
Some people have so much, and value so little
Where others have none, and yet rise as ONE 
To fight back the demons that possess so many other sons

Such goons lay insult on the souls of prior generations
Who fought for freedom, or equality of Asians
Who built bridges between skins both white and black 
So Brits could sit comfortably next to Haitians

This is not how the story should end

In devilish collaboration is not what they believed

So there we have it, straight from the Almighty
These riots are pointless
And the losses are plenty
But there’s more of “Us” and fewer of “Them”
Let’s reclaim this town that surrounds the River Thames
Dust off and re-polish London – for it truly is a gem

2010 desiFEST Highlights is NOW Available on ROD

Canada's largest South Asian music concert desiFEST (presented by Rogers) is proud to launch for the 2nd year in a row their 2010 concert highlights on Rogers-On-Demand and RODO.

desiFEST (presented by Rogers) was the first South Asian concert in Canada to have highlights available on Rogers-On-Demand in 2009, giving audiences of all ages and cultures the ability to enjoy Canada's largest South Asian concert in the comfort of their own homes.

desiFEST's lead-up to its 5th year anniversary event included producing South Asian showcases for both Canadian Music Week and Junofest this past March. 2011's line-up was a great tribute to its five years of inception, with a mix of new artists and a tribute to veterans that have been making moves locally and internationally in the music industry.

"desiFEST" (presented by Rogers) is Canada's only national South Asian music Festival. Creating opportunities for South Asian artists and South Asian inspired music, the event strengthens local communities, inspires youth, and supports the arts community in Canada. The festival has toured Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver showcasing over 75 incredible artists and over 24 hours of music each year.

Euphoria - 'Hindi Rock' Pioneer

Euphoria is an iconic Indian rock band with a twist, considering they play rock music in Hindi. With an unparalleled mass appeal, and critical acclaim, Euphoria is widely considered as the biggest band in the subcontinent. Put together by Dr. Palash Sen and his friends in New Delhi in 1988, 20 years later, they are the sole survivors of the pop music wave that hit the nation in the mid-nineties.

Palash Sen, front-man and doctor, stuck to his dreams of performing in front of crowds and entertaining people. He is known to empty the tank night after night. 

Bass player extraordinaire, Debajyoti Bhaduri, joined hands with Palash in the early nineties and adopted Euphoria as his own dream. The duo has been playing together ever since.

Moving through several line ups, the band kept searching for their elusive break. It came 10 years after their inception in 1988. Euphoria released their first studio album titled ‘Dhoom’ in the October of 1998 to critical acclaim and commercial success. They became the pioneers of ‘Hind Rock’ or rock music in Hindi.  Their first single was titled ‘Dhoom Pichuk’ – and it became the most popular video to hit TV screens in that decade. Directed by ad-guru Pradeep Sarkar, the video became a benchmark for non Bollywood music videos.

After the success of ‘Dhoom’, Euphoria started work on their second studio album ‘Phir Dhoom’; and delivered hit singles such as ‘Phir Dhoom’, ‘Rock Sako’, and ‘Pyar Hi Tha’. But it was their first single ‘Maaeri’ which became their most successful song, and their trademark tune.  Two back to back hit records had already cemented Euphoria as a force to be reckoned with.

In 2001, the band released what would be India’s first single ‘Mantra’, and established their unique hind rock resonance which was an eclectic mixture of Indian and global sounds.

Mantra was later included in the band’s third album, ‘Gully’ in 2003, which was an instant craze amongst the Indian audiences. Three music videos were made for the songs ‘Ana Meri Gully’, ‘Raja Rani’ and ‘Ab Na Jaa’ and all of them received heavy airplay on mainstream TV channels.

In 2006, the fourth studio album ‘Mehfuz’ surprised critics and fans alike. The new sound and the maturity in the songwriting won a lot of hearts and made Euphoria the only force in Indian music which could commercially take on Bollywood. Four music videos were released for the songs ‘Soneya’, ‘Mehfuz’, ‘Bewafaa’, and ‘Rab Jaane’.

In 2008, the band completed 10 years of their recording career and released ‘ReDhoom’ a commemorative compilation album consisting of 12 of Euphoria’s biggest hits with a music video of the song ‘Bhoola Sab’.

Euphoria has played live concerts across the country and the globe, and is known to be the most prolific live act from India.  The band is now readying for the release of their highly awaited fifth studio album, scheduled for a release in August 2011 and is also shooting for an upcoming documentary on 14 of their popular music videos, to be webcast on the internet. Besides that, they will also make a comeback in the Bollywood circuit with their song ‘Jiya Jaye Na’ for the film Mumbai Cutting, starring Dr. Palash Sen in the lead role.

After a successful tour of the USA in November 2010 and the release of ‘Dilli Meri Jaan’ and ‘Gateway to your heart’ the theme tracks of the Commonwealth Games 2010, the band is looking forward to.. what else, but more DHOOM…

RDB release a preview of “Shera Di Khom Punjabi” featuring rapper Ludacris

RDB has just released a snippet of their song “Shera Di Khom Punjabi” featuring multi-platinum rapper Ludacris, which is also the main song from the highly anticipated, upcoming film Breakaway.

The snippet was released through RDB’s record label Three Records, and though only 50 seconds in length, it definitely showcases RDB’s vast production and vocals, while complementing Ludacris’s unique hip hop style.

This is not RDB’s first collaboration with Hip Hop, as in 2008, along with Akshay Kumar, they worked with multi-platinum rapper Snoop Dogg on the much acclaimed title track from the movie Singh is King.

Look for this new collaboration with Ludacris to make some serious noise in the upcoming weeks, as Breakaway opens in theatres on September 30^th.

Shujaat Khan

Shujaat Husain Khan is perhaps the greatest North Indian classical musician of his generation. He belongs to the Imdad Khan gharana (tradition) of the sitar (lute) and is the seventh in the unbroken line from his family that has produced many musical masters. His style known as the gayaki ang, is imitative of the subtleties of the human voice.

Shujaat Husain Khan is the son and disciple of master sitarist Ustad Vilayat Khan. His musical pedigree continues back through his grandfather, Ustad Inayat Khan; his great-grandfather, Ustad Imdad Khan; and his great-great-grandfather, Ustad Sahebdad Khan - all leading artist of their generation.

At the age of three Shujaat Husain Khan began practicing on a specially made small sitar, and by the time he was six, the child prodigy started giving public performances. Since then he has performed at all the prestigious music festivals in India and has traveled around the world performing in Asia, Africa, North America and Europe. Shujaat Husain Khan has developed his own unique style of playing Indian classical music. His approach to rhythm is largely intuitive, fresh and spontaneous - always astonishing his audiences. He is also known for his exceptional voice, which he uses for singing folk songs and poetry.

On the occasion of India's 50th anniversary of independence, a music festival was held in the United States. In this Shujaat Husain Khan was a featured artist and, among other locations, performed at the Carnegie Hall in New York, Paramount Theater in Seattle, and Meyers Symphony Theater in Dallas. In continuance of this commemoration, the United Nations bestowed upon him a special honour, choosing him as the sole artist to represent India with a performance at the prestigious Assembly Hall in Geneva.

His memorable appearances include performances at the Royal Albert Hall in London, Royce Hall in Los Angeles and Congress Hall in Berlin. In the summer of 1999, he was the featured soloist with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra. His collaboration with different genres of music has been a very strong point as is evidenced by the enormously successful Indo-Persian venture, the Ghazal Ensemble. Their album, Rain, was nominated for a Grammy award in 2004.

In January 2000, the Boston Herald listed Shujaat Husain Khan, along with luminaries like Seiji Ozawa and Luciano Pavarotti among the top 25 upcoming cultural events for the year.

He has been invited as visiting faculty at the Dartington School of Music in England, the University of Washington in Seattle, and the University of California at Los Angeles.

He has over 50 musical releases on a variety of international labels; and also a very commercially successful video called KHANDAN. Additionally, he has been honored with numerous awards by many different Indian and international organizations.

In August 2009, Shujaat Husain Khan was one of the artists who made it on Amazon.com's 100 Greatest World Music albums of all time.

A very well known Bollywood playback singer, Asha Bhosle is as popular as her elder sister, who is also a renowned singer. She has mesmerized India with her amazing voice and has dominated the Indian music industry for a period more than six decades. Even now, she is constantly enhancing her music collection and entertaining the people.

Asha Bhosle is a very versatile singer, who has put her heart and soul in modulating her voice to come up with something original and creative. Her voice is very adaptative. She is very well able to sing the songs for romantic situation. When naughtiness is required, she can change her voice and sing according to the situation. In this article, we will present you with the biography of Asha Bhosle.

Life

Asha was born on September 8, 1933 in a small village of Goar in Sangli, Maharashtra to the Marathi family. She is the daughter of Pandit Dinanath Mangeshkar, who was a theater artist as well as a classical singer. She lost her father, when she only nine years old. The family kept moving from one place to another. They went from Pune to Kolhapur and then to Bombay (now Mumbai). To support the family, she and her elder sister Lata started singing in the films. She got her first break when she signed the agreement to sing the song "Chala Chala Nav Bala" for the Marathi movie Majha Bal (1943). Her first Hindi song was "Saawan aaya", which was recorded for Hansraj Behl's film Chunariya (1948). When she was sixteen, she fell in love with a 31-year old man Ganpatrao Bhosle and she was firm about marrying him. She eloped with him and tied her wedding knots with him against the wishes of her family. She did not derive happiness in this relationship and after a few years, she shifted to her mother's home along with her kids.

She is one of the most skilled and talented singers. Her music repertoire consists of film music, ghazals, pop, traditional Indian Classical music, folk songs, qawwalis, bhajans, and Rabindra Sangeet. She has sung songs in fourteen languages including Hindi, Marathi, Bengali, Gujarati, Punjabi, Tamil, English, Russian and Malay. She has sung nearly 12,000 songs.

Though, she has made a vast collection of music, but she is most famous for the Bollywood songs. She headed her first step towards establishing her career in the year 1943. She has been the most prominent personality of the Indian music industry since the last six decades. She has done playback singing for more than 950 Bollywood movies.

Career

Initially, Asha had to struggle a lot to get assignments to sing for the lead roles. However, during the 1950s, she sang a large number of songs. Infact, period she sung more than any other playback singer. Her initial songs were mainly composed by Sajjad Hussain, A R Qureshi and Ghulam Mohammed. Thereafter, she got plenty of singing assignments.

Apart from Hindi songs, she also sang for many Marathi movies such as Khedyamadhle ghar kaularu, Majha hoshil Kaa? Bugadi mazi and Nach re mora. Her Marathi bhajans, natyageet and bhav-geet are liked by people even today. O.P. Nayyar gave a boost to her career by giving her a major break in C.I.D. (1956). Asha's performance in the film Teesri Manzil was well acclaimed. In the film, she worked along with R.D.Burman. Thereafter, they worked together in quite a number of films and also decided to tie wedding knots with each other. Their collaboration earned them name and fame.

During 1960s and 1970s, she became the voice of the most famous dancer of Bollywood Helen. Popular Asha Bhosle-Helen numbers include Piya tu ab to aaja (Caravan), O Haseena Zulfon Wali (Teesri Manzil) and Yeh Mera Dil (Don). She took up the challenge of showing her versatility by taking up the challenge of singing Ghazals in the films Umrao Jaan (1981) and Ijazat (1987). Her work was widely applauded.

During the 1990s Asha experimented with the remixed versions of R.D. Burman songs. Her efforts were criticized by many people, accusing her for tampering with the golden melodies of the past. Nevertheless, there were albums like "Rahul And I", which were appreciated by people. In the year 1997, Asha came out with her private Indipop album Janam Samjha Karo, which was a major hit. The album brought her great honor and recognition. She even received the 1997 MTV Award.

Join us for patriotic songs at 9:30 am followed by a flag raising ceremony, singing of the national anthem, and the Grand Parade. The 2 km parade will feature 10 floats and thousands of marchers. Many dignitaries and celebrities are expected to march with the Parade.

 Cultural performances by community groups

Just after we return from the parade at 12:45pm, many community groups will present stellar performances on the open stage at Yonge+Dundas Square. Come celebrate and take pride in the enormous talent of the Indo-Canadian community.
